Types of Rugs

Rugs make a room feel grounded and comfortable. They soften the feel of a hard floor, absorb impact from walking on it and provide texture to the space. Rugs also help to anchor furniture and create a sense of coziness.

In addition to providing warmth and comfort, rugs are versatile decorative elements that can create a theatrical feeling in a space and bring colour and pattern to it. They can define a conversation area in a living room or add a warm, earthy tone to a bedroom or family room. They can also serve as a base to layer a room’s decor, including furniture and other home textiles.

The most common type of rug is a pile-woven one, which has fibres sticking up from the base of the strands to form a dense and plush carpet. It is a good choice for high-traffic areas because it is easy to vacuum and clean. It can also be machine-washed, which is convenient when it gets dirty.

Other types of rugs include flat-weave and hooked rugs. Flat-weave rugs have no pile and can be made from recycled fabrics such as T-shirts or fraying bedsheets. They are cheaper and more durable than a traditional carpet. They are also reversible, which is helpful when they get stained.

A hook rug is similar to a rag rug in that it uses recycled materials, but they are made by punching a yarn or thread into the surface of the fabric to create a knotted, braided design. Hooked rugs are a bit more expensive than rag rugs because the materials and labour required to create them are higher.
