The Importance of Rugs in the Home

A rug is a soft, usually thick woven fabric that can be placed on the floor to add comfort and warmth. It can also serve as a focal point for a room or help create a specific aesthetic. It is an important accessory for any home.

A typical rug has a field design, which varies in size and complexity, and a border that encircles the whole rug. The border may be simple, with inner and outer guard stripes, or more elaborate with an allover design. A rug may also be decorated with other patterns, such as a medallion system or geometric motif, or both.

Rugs are especially useful for high traffic areas, such as living rooms and family rooms. Their softness and warmth provide comfort for feet and legs, and they absorb some of the impacts of furniture legs on the floor. In addition, they can be used to delineate a conversation space from a dining or sitting area and to help establish a sense of belonging in the room.

In the study reported here, participants were asked to illustrate their life story on a rug with different colors. The time reserved for this task was one hour, which was sufficient to complete the illustration and discuss its meaning. The methodological approach used was inspired by Rose’s framework for reading visual data (Rose, 2016). In the present study, participants were encouraged to think about the rugs as signs and their codes and how they connect with other symbols in their lives. This helped them understand their life stories and the role of the rugs in their lives.
