How to Choose a Rug for Your Home

A rug instantly transforms a room, adding color, warmth and texture. It’s also a great way to add decorative elements without permanently altering the wall or floor.

Rugs are especially good for rooms where you’re not allowed to paint walls, hang new art or other permanent decorations. They can be a fun way to introduce a bold print or other unexpected element to a room and are easy to change out when you want a fresh look.

If you have wood floors, a rug is a necessity to protect them from scratches and stains. It’s also a good idea to use rugs in hallways and other high traffic areas to keep dirt from being tracked in from outside and to help you avoid scuffing up your beautiful wood floors.

In general, your rug should extend far enough underneath all of the major upholstered pieces (sofa, chair etc) to ensure that at least their front legs are on the rug and not off. It’s also a good idea for a rug to cover the entire bed when placed in a bedroom.

A woven cloth of silk, cotton or other fibers. It can be dyed to match the décor or left natural to create a more earthy, organic look. Some rugs are treated with chemicals to make them more lustrous or to slow the wear and tear of heavy furniture and high traffic areas. It’s not a process favored by purist rug weavers.
