Choosing a Rug for Your Home

Rugs are a wonderful way to add a layer of warmth, colour and texture to your home. They can also define areas in rooms that aren’t anchored by wall-to-wall carpeting, mark off zones like the living room from the kitchen and dining area and add a focal point that helps to tie a room together. And they’re a fantastic way to hide stains and distracting imperfections in wood or tile floors.

Whether your style is boho-chic, modern, traditional or somewhere in between, there’s a rug out there for you. They come in every size, shape and material imaginable and they can be as simple or complex as you want them to be. Rugs are a great place to start when decorating your space because they allow you to experiment with different colours and patterns without making a huge commitment, and they work just as well as, if not better than, art or throw pillows to unify your colour schemes.

In the case of hand-crafted rugs, this is especially true. They’re often knotted, stitched or woven by master craftspeople and they use all or almost exclusively natural fibres like wool, cotton and hemp. These rugs are truly one-of-a-kind statement pieces and they’re built to last.

They are a little more complicated than broadloom carpeting because they’re typically made to order and sold off the roll in the dimensions you need. They tend to have more intricate designs than broadloom carpeting and they can be a lot smaller in square footage because they’re not glued down. They’re also more flexible because they can be rolled up and moved from room to room, which is important if you have pets or kids, or if you’re in a rental and don’t want to damage your landlord’s floors with permanent installation.
