Pirot rugs are one such category, known as Sarkoys or kilims, a name stemming from the ancient town of Pirot, once a major rug-making centre in Thracia (modern Bulgaria). Pirot rugs are known for their bright colours and floral designs. They were formerly used to cover the decks of sajkasi boats, which carried cargo along the Danube and Drava rivers in the Balkans. Today, Pirot rugs can be found in museums and private collections around the world. The earliest Pirot rugs were coloured with plant dyes, but this was later replaced by aniline. The best examples are in excellent condition with little or no wear, with a deep, rich colour and good sheen.
