Designing a Life Size Rug

A rug is a great way to warm up a space and create a cosy feel. It can help define a space, provide a base for furniture and layer a room’s decor. Rugs come in a variety of materials, styles and colours. They can be modern, graphic or traditional and a rug can be the perfect focal point in a room.

Rugs are softer underfoot than hardwood or tile flooring and offer more insulating value than hard surfaces. They also provide cushioning that helps reduce falls and injuries especially in areas with a lot of foot traffic like hallways and entranceways.

Participants were asked to design their rugs on white paper with a frame of a rug and use different colour pencils to illustrate their life story. This was done after the face to face in depth interview as a follow up to their narrating their lives. This process of doing the rug gave them an opportunity to repeat their narrating in visual form and allow their thoughts, feelings and perceptions to flow in a creative setting.

The rugs were then woven on the Jacquard mechanism that allows for the loom to be programmed to weave a patterned carpet by using perforated cards to control the weaving of tufts in various colors. The rugs are coloured in such a manner to reflect the meaning and significance of the participant’s life story. For example, Rug 1 was decoded to mean recovery and healing, whereas Rug 10 is seen as a change from a difficult time.
