Rugs can change a room’s appearance and create a sense of warmth in cold floors. In addition, rugs add comfort underfoot and reduce noise. Rugs can also protect hardwood floors from stains, scratches and scuff marks. They’re especially useful in rooms with a high amount of foot traffic, such as the dining room or entryway to the home.
The rug was used to anchor the seating arrangement (or in a bedroom, for the main grouping – bed & nightstands normally) and to visually join together smaller items on the floor like side tables, chairs and sofas. The positioning of the furniture on the rug needed to be balanced (as a large piece of artwork would be balanced on a wall) and also leave clear walking paths to other rooms if necessary.
Participants created their rugs on a white sheet of paper with a frame of the rug and coloured pencils. They interpreted their lives and emotions through the design of their rugs. The resulting colour interpretations, for example red as feeling and recovery, blue as a time of change and yellow as a creative process towards something good, coincided with the participants’ explanations during the interviews.
A rug can be a great way to hide an unsightly stain or imperfection in a wood floor, or simply to make a room look less utilitarian. They can also provide traction on slippery wood or tile flooring, and keep feet warm and comfortable, especially on cold floors.
