In the context of home decorating, rug refers to an item of thick fabric or other material that covers a floor. It might be used to prevent scratches or to trap heat, but the most common use of rug is to add color and comfort.
A rug can be made of cotton, silk, wool, hemp, or jute, and may be designed to be either machine-washed or hand-washed. It can be either synthetic or natural, and it is usually bound with a non-synthetic material such as leather to make it into a finished rug. Synthetic rugs are usually produced in factories, while handmade rugs are typically created by individual craftspeople at workshops in Asia or the Middle East.
Many antique and modern rugs are woven with plant dyes, such as cotton, and are often considered to be “natural.” In addition to being natural, these rugs can also be more durable than synthetic carpets, with less shedding, less fading, and longer lifespan.
The oldest rugs are generally considered to be Persian rugs, with the oldest known examples dating back to the 17th century. Other important rug-making centers included the Pirot and the towns of Berkowiza, Lom, Chiprovtsi, and Samokov in the Western Balkan or Stara Planina mountains. The rugs from these areas are referred to as Sarkoy, or the kilims of Pirot.
Carpet is not as hygienic as other types of flooring, attracting allergens and mold and requiring frequent cleaning. It’s also more likely to show wear and tear than wood or tile, and can be prone to moisture damage that leads to mold or rot. However, carpet is less expensive than other types of flooring.
