The Process of Making a Rug
Handmade area rugs go through several steps in the weaving process. The first step is to prepare the fibers for use in a rug, which includes spinning them into yarns of uniform thickness and quality. Then, natural or synthetic carpet dyes are used to color the yarns to achieve the desired colors. The loom is set up with vertical warp threads and horizontal weft threads, and the weaver inserts a pattern hanging on the loom that guides where colored yarns are tied around the warp threads. The weft threads are then woven over and under the warp threads, creating the patterned areas of the rug.
Most rugs are made by the tufting method, which involves a prewoven fabric that moves through a high-speed machine as a bank of giant needles inserts individual tufts of yarn from spools on giant creels. Then, a small knife beside each hook cuts the tufted yarn to form the pile.
